The Essentials of Grant Writing
Description
Grant proposals are the "life blood" of many organizations. They secure funds for needed services, projects and mean jobs for agency staff. Yet, this vital document is assigned to occasional and untrained grant writers. The fate of a project can hinge on their success of applying this "specialized" competency.

If you are a new or occasional grant writer, this workshop is for you. It will teach you fundamental skills that are applicable to a variety of situations related to both public and private funding sources. Your organization will benefit by raising more funds through grant proposals. You'll be able to immediately write "better" grant proposals. Your new proposals will describe projects around specific client needs and through  measurable outcomes that demonstrate the impact of the grant.

The agenda will include: 
  • Grant writing for increased accountability
  • How to define the need for a grant or project.
  • How to create two unique tools that will add punch to your proposal (Not found in other workshops.)
  • How to use the Internet to find Grant Makers
  • How to write an abstract with impact.
  • How to a persuasive needs statement.
  • How write grant outcomes and activities.
  • How to design an effective grant or project evaluation component.
  • Analyze a real grant (case study lab) - "Pick a Plum Exercise."
  • How to continue learning after the workshop with grant writing resources: books and web sites.

Length
This six hour workshop includes problem solving discussions and action planning.  An optional second day focuses on creating budgets, evaluation components, and a writing lab (each participant receives specific feedback).

Who Should Attend
This workshop is for new or occasional grant writers interested in the fundaments of grant writing. Experienced grant writers will find the workshop useful because several small and large group exercises will provide opportunities to share information.

Pre/Post Workshop Activities (Optional)
Pre-workshop activities and post-workshop technical assistance will be designed to build the skills of individual grant writers while benefiting their respective organizations. Participants will be asked to completed several pre-workshop activities related to grant proposals to prepare them for the workshop. Each participant will receive personal feedback from the instructor that can be applied to the grants of their organization.

Handout
Each participant will receive Roe's 50 page, custom handout.  Additional materials are provided based on the specific needs of the client. The sponsor handles reproduction of Roe's materials.  Reproduction rights to the handouts is available on a flat-fee basis.  Contact Roe for more information.

Audiovisual Needs
Laptop w/PowerPoint and Large Screen Projector, and Screen (An overhead projector is a second option). Two flip charts, paper, and marking pens.
